Zebra’s Bistro and Wine Bar

In a restaurant called Zebra’s Bistro and Wine Bar, one might expect to see lots of black and white stripes. In fact, the décor is anything but harsh. The atmosphere is sophisticated and warm , with walls swathed in mustard, burnt orange, lime green and brick tones, and soft lighting that creates a soothing dining experience. Overall, the food matches the ambience – elegant, with creative touches, but not pretentious.
For example, how often do you see barbecued alligator ribs .. on a menu? Meaty and thick like a beef rib, with what tasted like a standard Buffalo – wing sauce, they were good, if not as interesting and different as the name suggest. What we enjoyed thoroughly among the appetizers was the artichoke strudel with strawberry coulis ..although we’d swear it was actually raspberry. The combination of light pastry with the dense artichoke and the sweetness of the fruit was a nice blend of flavors and textures. We found the same imaginative combination of the tastes in some of the main courses. The roasted grouper with asiago crust in champagne sauce..and full of flavor, but if you’re not a cheese lover, forget it. The asiago was pungent and competed wih the fish. But the roasted vegetable-stuffed lamb baron over a pear puree, topped with blue cheese, was prepared flawlessly. The lamb was tender and the pear and cheese complemented the meat beautifully. The molasses-roasted duck with mango chutney.. was most notable for the chutney, which did not overwhelm the meat, as sometimes happens with duck. The dish was definitely good if not memorable. The same can be said fo the grilled New York strip with Madeira wine sauce; it was your garden-variety strip steak. Fine preparation but nothing outstanding.
For the prices, however, the portions were not skimpy. The desserts, all were terrific. The vanilla bean crème brulee with almond biscotti with delicate and smooth, with the perfect amount of vanilla, and the biscotti so light they practically melted in your mouth. The peach almond tart with caramel sauce and toasted almonds was, again, a nice mixture of flavors and textures. The chocolate lava cake with vanilla bean ice cream was dense, without being overly rich, and gave us chocoholics in the group the fix we needed.
Because we had a reservation, we didn’t have to wait, which was almost too bad, since there are deep, comfy couches and chairs in the bar area. And true to its name, Zebra’s has an impressive list of wines – more than 80 to choose from, including more than 20 by the glass. And some in our party expressed an interest in trying out the extensive sushi bar on the next visit. That was perhaps the best part of Zebra’s : the versatility of the menu, which offers something for everyone.

Zebra’s Bistro and Wine Bar a hip lounge and a cozy dining room with live weekly jazz and a great, affordably priced wine list, plus a menu packed with creative dishes and healthy options – what’s not to like? Zebra’s offers fresh, clean salads and veggie appetizers (like straight-from-the garden asparagus), and terrific daily specials such as handmade striped ravioli. We even get cravings for the simple bread presentation – crusty batardes with artichoke spread – that we can’t satisfy when we’re stuck in the city.

2003 - Boston Restaurants
“Medfield? Yup, Medfield” marvel admirers of this “breath of fresh air”, an “eclectically” decorated dining room that easily “beats the formula restaurants” you usually find “in the ‘burbs”; fans favor the “high-end” “bistro-type” New American menu (starring the signature zebra-striped lobster ravioli) and appreciate the “excellent bar” too; “if it were in Boston or Cambridge, it would be a new hot spot”, but most insist it’s “worth the trip from anywhere.”
